I think of these mixed media pieces as small, non-representational paintings, intended to provoke a response from a viewer in the same way a piece made from pigment and binder might. They are explorations of color and texture, and the manner in which these can generate thoughts, feelings, memories. Each develops through the play of crisp and soft, line and mass, echo and counterpoint.
I am drawn to the delicacy and lushness of different weights of fabric; intrigued by the way color and surface play against each other; delighted by odd combinations that yet make visual sense.
These pieces occupy the hinterland of tradition, referencing the human history of stitch and thread, hand and machine work, quilting, embroidery and beading, while carrying an intention beyond adornment or pure decoration.
